前不久，BBC刊出一条国际新闻（www.bbc.com/news/technology-35251478） 大意是：近期有人发现Google Translate在从乌克兰语自动翻译到俄语时，居然把“俄罗斯联邦”译为“魔多”——看过《魔戒》的朋友都知道：魔多是暗黑魔君索伦统治的国度。
（截屏里，把俄外长“拉夫罗夫”译为“悲伤的小马”；“俄罗斯人”译为“占领者”）
常识告诉我：这种匪夷所思的错误肯定是人干的。当然谷歌第一时间修正了这个错误。
联想到乌俄两国近年来交恶的背景，保不齐是哪个憎恶俄罗斯的乌克兰黑客干的（当然你要说是美国网军干的，试图挑起纷争从中渔利我也没意见）。关键是：这件事充分印证了Google Translate的巨大影响力，否则BBC这种顶尖国际媒体也不会报道毫无价值的新闻。
更厉害的是，我的那篇《人机翻译比拼复盘》在微信圈获得不错的点击数后，谷歌翻译居然也能通过网络爬虫找到我（当然这两件事是否一定存在因果关系还存疑，只是时间上太过巧合），给我的邮箱发来他们的社区电子报（截屏见下图）。
这份电子报里对谷歌翻译负责人（Macduff Hughes，见下图）的访谈很有意思，我翻译出来与大家分享——老规矩，同时Po出这篇报告的谷歌机译版（这次不让实习生PE了），大家对比一下。

翻译社区是谷歌的一个重要部分翻译。社区翻译帮助我们改进翻译简单，白天的日常短语的能力。例如，之前我们推出翻译社区，是一个简单的问题：“你叫什么名字？”被翻译字面意思为法国的“CE EST VOTREprénom”。随着社区的投入，法语翻译（“QUEL EST VOTREprénom”）现在更加自然。
许多社区成员都好奇发生了什么，他们提交了材料。你能描述一个成员提交被如何在谷歌翻译挑？
当有人提出翻译或验证，他们的回答会去“等候室”进行评估。好的翻译接受和坏的被拒绝。如有疑问，翻译送回社区进行验证。这个评估过程后，从社区成员普遍接受的翻译将被谷歌翻译接受。下一次有人类型在谷歌的短语或句子翻译，新，社区矫正翻译将出现。
在哪里翻译或验证的问题来自何处？
我国的大多数问题都来自经常问来通过谷歌翻译的短语。我们相信，如果这些频繁的短语，比如“你怎么样？”或者“我能帮助你吗？”，正确翻译，我们可以帮助很多世界各地的人们更好地沟通。

What role does Translate Community play in Google Translate?Translate Community is a critical part of Google Translate. Community translations help improve our ability to translate simple, day-to-day phrases. For example, before we launched Translate Community, a simple question like “What’s your first name?” was translated very literally as “ce est votre prénom” in French. With Community’s input, the French translation (“quel est votre prénom”) is now much more natural.Many of the Community members are curious about what happens to a submission they made. Can you describe how a member submission gets picked in Google Translate?When someone submits a translation or validation, their answer will go to a “waiting room” for evaluation. Good translations get accepted and bad ones get rejected. When in doubt, the translations are sent back to Community for validation. After this evaluation process, commonly accepted translations from community members will be accepted by Google Translate. Next time someone types the phrase or sentence in Google Translate, the new, corrected community translation will show up.Where are the translation or validation questions coming from?The majority of our questions come from commonly asked phrases that come through Google Translate.
